From waste to value

Collection is only the start. The KEWASTE project gives each material a destination, and gives Watamu a place where waste becomes a resource again.

Built in the right order

Phase 1 · running since 1 October 2026

Collection, done properly

Scheduled collection, trained crews and proper disposal. Reliability comes first: that is how we earn Watamu's trust.

Phase 2 · running

Sorting and recovery, with Registree

Instead of building a second facility, KEWASTE invested in Registree's plant in Gede, funding the machinery needed to sort and process what we collect.

Under construction

Our own sorting centre, being built now

Next to Registree in Gede, KEWASTE is building its own sorting centre. Every load we collect will be weighed and separated there, before each material goes on to its recycling route.

A second life for each material

What "from waste to value" means in practice: each material follows a recycling route with processors in Kenya.

Glass

Crushed into cullet, then melted into new glass.

Plastic

Sorted by type and baled, then reprocessed into recycled plastic products.

Cardboard

Baled and pulped into new paper and packaging.

Aluminium

Recovered and re-melted. It can be recycled again and again.

Organic

Running now with Registree. Black Soldier Fly larvae turn organic waste into animal feed and fertiliser, with composting alongside.

On paper, not just a promise

KEWASTE is NEMA-certified and authorised by the County of Kilifi. Every invoice is a KRA eTIMS invoice, with VAT as the law requires, so it is tax-deductible for businesses.

The whole chain can be traced, load by load. Only around 10 to 15% of what we collect ends up in landfill; the rest is recycled or recovered.
